James Herald, JD, resides in Pikeville, KY, in rural southeastern Kentucky and works in administration for a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), Big Sandy Health Care, Inc. (“BSHC”). Prior to this he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in English & Government at Morehead State University in 2002 and received a Juris Doctorate after completing law school at the University of Kentucky College of Law in 2005. Mr. Herald has been licensed to practice law since October, 2005 in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Mr. Herald is a Life Fellow of the Kentucky Bar Foundation. In addition to his work for BSHC, Mr. Herald was in private practice from 2005-2019 and represented clients in health care and employment related matters in state and federal courts. Since March 1, 2008 he has been employed by Big Sandy Health Care, Inc. in a variety of administrative capacities. Most recently, Mr. Herald has been employed by BSHC as Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel, starting November 1, 2019. In that role he provides administrative oversight for many areas of the organization including pharmacy, dental, optometry, outreach and enrollment and black lung services. In addition, he is involved in BSHC’s emergency and risk management programs and oversees the organization’s legal affairs, including a medical-legal partnership that brings legal services to BSHC patients. Outside work Mr. Herald enjoys spending time with his family and hiking.
