Known among her friends and colleagues for her sunny disposition, love for nature and zeal to serve others, Dr. Brenda Kapingidza joined the Office of Data Governance and Modernization at the South Carolina Department of Public Health as the assistant director of Data Governance and Modernization in August 2024. She holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry (concentration in Molecular Immunology) from the University of South Carolina. Previously, she worked at the Duke Human Vaccine Institute where she managed a team of 10, mentored over 25 junior scientists, and led innovative research, resulting in 22 peer-reviewed publications (including Ph.D. work), two U.S. patents, and numerous awards, including the 2023 esteemed Duke Research Award for Excellence.
Beyond her scientific achievements, Dr. Kapingidza is committed to advancing human health through data-driven solutions. She has served as an executive member on the Duke Center for AIDS Research Steering Committee, focusing on public vaccine and HIV education and addressing health disparities. In her current role, she oversees data governance and modernization initiatives, collaborating with program areas to tackle data-related challenges and strengthen cooperative networks within the agency.
Dr. Kapingidza’s dedication to service and leadership aligns with SC DPH’s values. Her favorite quote, “It is not the brains that matter most, but that which guides them — the character, the heart, generous qualities, progressive ideas,” by Fyodor Dostoevsky, reflects her approach to life and work. She enjoys volunteering, spending time with loved ones, and engaging in outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and writing poetry.
